Our Approach
INCLUSION-FIRST
Inclusion first means ensuring that everyone actively feels heard, valued, and included. Our vast experience and results have demonstrated that engagement, productivity (and much more!) improve in an inclusive environment.
SAFE + CONFIDENTIAL
We establish empathetic, safe environments where participants
feel comfortable being authentic and openly and honestly discussing topics that may be challenging.
ACTION-ORIENTED
We focus on behaviors, not attitudes. We provide participants with the
tools and skills that enable them to adopt behaviors that promote a creating an inclusive workplace.
INTERACTIVE + ENGAGING
Participants learn best by actively engaging with the content and each other. Most of the learning in our work comes from peer discussions, personal experience sharing, and introspection.
NON-JUDGEMENTAL
We don’t blame and shame! Our workshops are constructive and positive, which sets up participants to learn with an open mind during training and continue to engage in positive behaviors beyond training.
INDIVIDUALIZED
We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach, and we work closely
with you to determine how Inclusity can best meet your organization’s specific needs.
Our history
Inclusity’s origin story goes back farther than its founding in 2013. It is inextricably woven into the history of its founder, Maria Arcocha White. In the early 1960s, four-year old Maria and her family fled Cuba as political refugees, arriving in Toledo, Ohio with only a few suitcases of belongings. As a young child navigating a new country, language, and culture, Maria felt acutely different and isolated during her formative years. At the time diversity and inclusion were hardly concepts, let alone valued; assimilation was the goal.
After college as the first Hispanic marketing manager and Proctor & Gamble, Maria became involved in the company’s nascent diversity initiatives. Immediately, she knew this work was her calling. In 1990, Maria joined a leading diversity training and consulting firm, where she spent a total of 17 years. While working for a DEI company in a diverse environment, she still felt excluded. This and what she observed and heard in the workshops she led caused her to understand the significant distinction between diversity and inclusion.
Among the deficiencies in the DEI field that she noticed, Maria realized there was a lack of focus on culture change. People weren’t learning how to behave inclusively. There was a need to connect people, instead of dividing them, like many DEI training approaches ended up doing. Creating an inclusive workplace first was the key. A seed was planted – the idea to start a company that led with inclusion.
That idea came to fruition in 2013, when she and her husband Bill White launched Inclusity, to pursue an empathetic, inclusion-focused approach to DEI work. The inclusion-first element of our approach is so fundamental that it is represented in our name: Inclusity is a portmanteau of “inclusion” and “diversity,” representing our company’s founding principle: lead with inclusion, and diversity will follow.
Elements of Individuality™ training
We believe that when people understand and value each other’s unique characteristics, it helps build trusting, productive relationships. This belief forms the foundation of our approach to Elements of Individuality™ training workshops. In a workshop, we ask participants to identify their defining attributes and then share the most important ones with the others. Through sharing and listening to each other, real connections start to be forged. Participants discover similarities and common ground. Most importantly, the process allows participants to recognize and appreciate that all people are diverse – that diversity goes beyond visible differences like gender and race.
